Debt Relief

There are lots of bankruptcy attorneys. Why chose Jim Craig? I have the experience you need. Since 1977, I have worked with clients to resolve their financial problems.

More, I have worked with Congress and our state legislature to improve bankruptcy law. Few bankruptcy attorneys are dedicated enough to travel to Pierre or Washington DC on their own dime to lobby for changes in laws to improve the legal treatment of debtors. I feel ethically bound to do so.

Bankruptcy Options Include:

  • Chapter 7: This will help you discharge unsecured debts, like consumer debts.
  • Chapter 13: This chapter of bankruptcy gives you additional time to repay your debts rather than canceling it. You need to be a wage earner or have sufficient regular income to use chapter 13.
  • Chapter 11: Under this chapter, your business debts will be reorganized and you will be given more time to repay.
  • Chapter 12: This legislation gives family farmers a chance to reorganize their debts and keep their farms.

Workouts - I also help clients achieve settlements of creditor claims outside of bankruptcy.

Being a professional entails investing in the right tools, and advocating for changes in the law to improve the situation of those who cannot speak for themselves. One way to do this is to educate policy makers.

My law review article addresses the sorry state of South Dakota’s exemption statutes. These statutes determine the property you keep when seeking a fresh start.
